Fair Haven is a community on the south shore of
Lake Ontario on the Seaway Trail. The official population of 900
swells to 3,000 in the summer months. The village has a large
residential waterfront community and some of the best public access
to the water on Lake Ontario. We are about forty miles from
Syracuse and fifty miles from Rochester. Oswego is about fifteen
miles to the east. The Syracuse airport is on our side of the city
and about thirty five miles away.
Little Sodus Bay, the official name of the bay at Fair Haven offers a
harbor protected from Lake Ontario by a concrete seawall. In the bay
itself there is plenty of activity: great bass, pike or perch fishing,
waterskiing and sailboat racing sponsored by Fair Haven Yacht Club. Lake
Ontario offers extensive cruising opportunities and world-class trout and
salmon fishing. Fair Haven Beach State Park is the jewel of the state system. There a
large sandy beach plus picnic and camping areas and one of the best boat
launches on the lake. Area residents enjoy the park year-around with
hiking, canoeing, biking and skiing. There is no charge for entering the
park without a vehicle. The Sterling Nature Center, a few miles to the east, on the shore of
Lake Ontario, provides several miles of hiking trails along with nature
exhibits and programs. An active nightlife and busy downtown are not part of the Fair Haven
menu, but there are several local restaurants, shops, marinas and a great
golf course. Featured entertainment during the summer months are Saturday
night band concerts in the village park and a colorful 4th of July
parade. There is a public water system throughout the village. Waste is
handled with individual septic systems although a regional sewer system
is under consideration. All village streets are well-lighted and
maintained year-around. The total property tax rate is about $27.00 per
$1,000. of assessed value; a very reasonable price for peace and
quiet. If you wish any additional information about us, please don't
